Our Gen-1 5051 harness used a sealed relay, but with an unsealed relay socket. In rare cases, the relay socket terminals begin to corrode, particuraly in harsh conditions or if the relay was mounted too low behind the bumper.
Our Gen-2 harness has a fully sealed relay socket with sealed relay to prevent this problem. There are 2 options for repair, both are covered under our 5-year limited warranty:
Option 1 - Send your existing harness in to us and we will professionally install a brand new fully sealed relay socket and relay. The harness will be inspected and tested to insure no other issues. If you prefer this option, please email us for an RMA number and instructions to return the product. Shipping costs incurred to return the product to us is your responsiblity, but we will ship the harness back to you at no charge.
Option 2 - Order this repair kit (free) to splice the relay in without having to remove the harness from your truck. This will require a wire stripping tool and a crimping tool (All-in-one tools can be found at the local hardware store if you dont have one) to complete the repair. Instructions for completing the procedure are below.
Note: While waiting for your repair kit, we recommend removing the fuse from the harness as a malfunctioning relay can sometimes cause the lights to stay on even with the switch off. Please follow the instructions below to splice-in the new relay:
- Remove the 15amp fuse from 5051 Reverse Lighting Harness. The fuse holder is positioned on the Red wire about 12 inches from the 12v power source you connected the harness to. This will be located under the hood of the truck. THIS WILL SHUT OFF POWER TO THE HARNESS YOU ARE ABOUT TO REPAIR!
- Cut off the defective relay / socket from the harness.
- Using a set of wire strippers, strip ¼” from each of the wires on the truck harness.
- Slide the included heat shrink tubing onto each wire.
- Using the supplied butt connectors and heat shrink tubing, splice the new relay socket wiring onto the 5051 Harness. Splice one wire at a time, being sure to match up the proper wires by size AND color.
- Use a blow dryer or other method to heat the black tubing which will shrink onto the butt connectors and seal the connection.
- Replace the fuse and test the system for function.
- Mount the relay in a high and dry location.
